alternativeto.net/software/evernote/ I was over on this site just recently, thought it may be worth posting. I'm interested to see the discussions over at LinkedIn where there have been changes. They don't really let people know about things, and have shut down groups that were discussing these. The bottom line is the determining factor. -Derek

Thanks for the link. Alternativeto is hit or miss, and because the content is crowd-sourced, you get some wild stuff. For example, I don't think anyone who actually uses a Mac and knows what they are about would recommend "notational velocity." It is a brilliant project, to be sure, but the "nvALT" fork of it is infinitely more useful and regularly updated (until now -- the developers will probably be switching to another client now that the code for notational velocity has aged beyond repair).
Anyhow, few of the things I recognize are "bad", but they scratch different itches, and few would really compare to Evernote. For all of the complaints (by myself and others), Evernote is unquestionably a powerful service that has few direct competitors. Arguably, the only real alternative in terms of multi-platform, reliable, and high level performance would be OneNote. I don't use OneNote myself, but that's because I am willing to confine myself primarily to the Mac OSX world in exchange for being able to take full advantage of nvALT and DEVONthink (two apps on the list).
If you have a particular use case to discuss, that might help narrow things down.
